LASIK Vision Correction
LASIK (Laser in-situ Keratomileusis) is a type of refractive surgery that reshapes the surface of the eye to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
- are at least 18 years of age
- have had a stable eye prescription for at least one year
- have no eye health issues
- want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contacts
- have no signs of glaucoma or cataracts
LASIK offers many advantages and improvements over other refractive surgery procedures, including little or no discomfort, immediate vision improvement as well as the ability to drive or return to work quickly, sometimes as soon as the next day. Most patients require no corrective lenses or eye wear following surgery.
LASIK is the most commonly performed elective surgery in America. As of 2011, over 11 million LASIK procedures have been performed in the US. LASIK is a safe, precise and a highly successful procedure for vision correction.
All laser vision correction procedures are not the same. Because of advanced training, fellowships specifically in LASIK, as well as thousands of successful procedures completed, Adelson Eye & Laser Center is recognized as the premier eye care provider in Michigan. Our surgeons are highly trained in a number of laser vision correction procedures. We’ve invested in the technology needed to provide you with the best possible care. We are prepared to help you choose the option that’s best for your individual vision problem, whether you’re nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism
Adelson Eye & Laser Center has moved from traditional LASIK to a completely custom and blade-less LASIK approach. This includes the most advanced laser technology available. Custom LASIK is the next generation in laser vision correction, allowing an individualized correction that produces a detailed map of the eye, much like a fingerprint. This map provides Dr. Adelson a representation of your vision based on the behavior of light waves. The result is an in-depth representation of the refractive error present in your eye. In turn, it allows Dr. Adelson to measure imperfections in your vision 25 times more precisely than standard methods used for glasses and contact lenses. The information will then guide the laser in customizing the treatment for your individual visual system.
- A potential greater chance of achieving 20/20 vision without glasses
- A potential greater chance of achieving better than 20/20 vision
- A potential reduction in the chance of losing visual quality or contrast sensitivity
- A potential reduction in the chance of night-vision disturbances
What is Blade-Less LASIK?
Traditionally an instrument called a microkeratome was used to create a corneal flap. With Blade-less LASIK, the flap is created using a laser as opposed to a manual blade. The laser operates at extremely high speeds, allowing tissue to be targeted and divided without heat or impact to surrounding tissue, thus creating a corneal flap that is much more precise.
When it is time for your LASIK treatment to be performed, Dr. Adelson separates the corneal tissue and then folds it back, thus creating your flap. Next, the laser is used to reshape the cornea. After the inner tissue of the corneal is reshaped, the flap is repositioned without the need for stitches.
Like conventional LASIK, custom, blade-free LASIK is a surgical procedure and has risks associated with it. It’s important to discuss its applications and potential complications with Dr. Adelson to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure.
